How it works

With projects, you know the cost, timeline, and deliverables ahead of time, so there are no surprises. Here’s how it works:

1. Browse landscaping design ideas

Browse the landscaping projects and samples on Upwork. You’ll find projects of all sizes, including small-backyard landscaping ideas, front-yard landscaping ideas, and large-scale landscaping ideas. Look for a landscape designer whose designs you really like.

2. Buy a project

Some projects have multiple tiers and add-ons, and some tiers relate to the size of the landscaping area. Be sure to customize the project to fit your needs. You’ll need to submit your payment to start the project, but we’ll hold it until you’ve approved the final landscaping design.

3. Work with your landscape designer

To get started, you’ll need to share your plans and ideas with the landscape designer.

The more details and specific requests you can give to a landscape designer, the better they’ll be able to create landscape ideas and garden ideas that match your vision and suit your property. You’ll want to provide plenty of detail about your outdoor space, including your climate, the amount of space you’re working with, and how much of the area is in shade.

In addition, think about any elements you might want to have included in the landscape design ideas:

  • Fire pit
  • Flower beds
  • Garden design elements such as a garden path or statues
  • Ground-cover plants
  • Mulch
  • Ornamental grasses
  • Outdoor fireplace
  • Outdoor living spaces and outdoor seating
  • Pavers
  • Pergola
  • Potted plants or in-ground plants, including perennials, annuals, and succulents
  • Raised garden beds
  • Retaining wall
  • River rocks and stepping stones
  • Seating area
  • Swimming pool
  • Trellis
  • Water features

The landscaper might ask you additional questions for clarification. They’ll also probably discuss some initial ideas and suggestions before creating a rendering.

4. Approve your new landscape design

Once your project is done, you can approve the design or request changes. After you approve the design, we’ll send your payment to the freelancer.
